Chakloon Weather

How to find the forecast for your city on weather.chakloon.net, what the page shows, how weather warnings and alerts work, and how to put the weather on your site with the widget or the API.

What it is

Chakloon Weather at weather.chakloon.net gives the current weather and the forecast for cities around the world. It is free and needs no account. The page also has a weather map at weather.chakloon.net/map.

Find your city

  1. Open weather.chakloon.net. We suggest the city that fits your location.
  2. To choose another city, type its name in the search field and pick it from the list.
  3. Press Add to favourites to keep the city in your list.
  4. Save the address of the city page in your browser if you check it often, for example weather.chakloon.net/ua/kyiv.

We suggest the city by the IP address of your connection. How we handle it is explained below.

What the page shows

  • Now: temperature, how it feels, wind, humidity, dew point, pressure, UV index and cloud cover.
  • By hour: the coming hours.
  • By day: highs and lows and wind for the coming days.
  • Sun and Moon: sunrise, sunset and the phase of the Moon.
  • Air quality, where data is available.
  • Warnings, where an official weather service publishes them for the area.

You can switch between °C and °F at the bottom of the page. The sources of the data are listed there as well.

Weather warnings

A warning is an official message of a national weather service about dangerous weather in an area, such as a storm, heavy rain, snow, frost or heat. When a warning is in force for the place you are looking at, it is shown on the city page with the forecast. The text of a warning is the official text of the service, in the language in which the service publishes it, and we do not change it.

We take warnings from these official sources:

  • MeteoAlarm (EUMETNET), for the countries of Europe;
  • NOAA National Weather Service, for the United States;
  • WMO SWIC, the severe weather information centre of the World Meteorological Organization, for the weather services of many other countries;
  • NOAA National Hurricane Center, for tropical cyclones.

If you find no warning for a place, that does not prove the weather there is safe. In doubt, check the national weather service of the country.

Alerts in the Chakloon bell

When you are signed in with your Chakloon Passport, we can tell you about dangerous weather in your favourite cities. The alerts arrive in the Chakloon bell, which is the same in every Chakloon service.

  1. Sign in at weather.chakloon.net.
  2. Open a city and press Add to favourites.
  3. In the panel Weather alerts, choose what to be told about: Official warnings, Thunderstorm, Frost, Strong wind and Heat. For frost, strong wind and heat you can set your own threshold.
  4. Press Save.

Official warnings come to the bell at the orange and the red level. Alerts about thunderstorm, frost, strong wind and heat come from the forecast for the next 24 hours. By default all alerts are on, with thresholds of 0 °C for frost, gusts of 60 km/h for strong wind and 30 °C for heat. We send no alerts at night, from 23:00 to 07:00 local time of the city, and not more often than once in 3 hours for one city; a red warning comes at any time.

Weather widget for your site

The widget puts a weather card for a city on any site. It is free and needs no API key.

  1. Open weather.chakloon.net/widget, or press Widget in the menu of the weather page.
  2. Choose the city, the theme (light or dark), the number of days (0, 3, 4 or 5) and the language. With the language of the visitor, the card is shown in the language of each visitor.
  3. Choose the kind of code, Script or Iframe, and press Copy.
  4. Paste the code into your page where the card should appear.

The script version is one line: it places the card on your page and fits its height to the content. The card links to the forecast of the city on Chakloon Weather. The widget stores nothing on the devices of your visitors.

Weather API

The weather API gives the same forecast, warnings included, to other sites and apps, so you can design the display yourself.

  1. Sign in at platform.chakloon.net with your Chakloon Passport.
  2. Create an API key.
  3. Call the weather API with your key. The first 1 000 requests a day are free.

When you show the forecast on your site, show the attribution of the sources that comes with each response. Details are in Chakloon Platform and in the API Terms.

Your location and data

  • We find the suggested city from the IP address of your connection with our own service Chakloon Geo. The address is not sent to anyone and is not written to a log. The place found for it is kept for 6 hours and then erased.
  • A precise location is used only if you press Locate precisely. Your browser asks your permission and gives the coordinates, and we do not store them on our server.
  • The last city you opened is remembered by the cookie wx_city in your browser, and your favourite cities are kept in your browser's local storage. Clearing the site data in your browser removes both.
  • When you are signed in, your favourite cities and your alert settings are also kept on our server with your account, so they are the same on all your devices. They are deleted together with your account.

More is in the Privacy Policy and in Cookies and local storage.
